About the group
When CDT purchased Cultybraggan Camp from the MoD in 2007, the deal also included a 46-acre area of hill ground to the south of the camp. For years it was used for sheep grazing and hill running — open land with panoramic views over Comrie and the surrounding area.
The CDT Woodland Group spent three years developing a detailed plan before any trees went in the ground. That plan — backed by a woodland creation grant from Scottish Forestry — now funds deer fencing and planting across the full 46 acres on behalf of CDT and its 700+ members. Perth and Kinross Council have described the project as a significant contribution to Scotland's target of 21% forest cover by 2032.
What we're planting
Species were chosen to match the land, soil, and local climate. The woodland is predominantly Birch, Oak, and Alder, with smaller amounts of Scots Pine, Aspen, Rowan, Willow, and Hazel. Many areas are being kept as open ground to preserve the views and maintain biodiversity — this is not a blanket plantation, it is a designed native woodland.
For people and wildlife
The woodland will become a recreational resource for Comrie — paths, accessible open space, and a place to experience native habitat close to the village. Conservation principles already guide work across Cultybraggan Camp, and the woodland extends that commitment to the wider landscape.
